“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” – these are the words of Neil Armstrong, the first man to step a foot on Moon. It was truly a mesmerizing and important moment for all the humans. It wasn’t achieved earlier and everyone thought it was impossible.
On 6 February 2018, a yet another seemingly impossible feat was achieved by the private space company SpaceX. They successfully launched the much awaited Falcon Heavy rocket into the orbit. It was broadcast live and millions of people watched this breathtaking event.
So, what is Falcon heavy?
The Falcon Heavy is SpaceX’s biggest and most powerful rocket with 27 engines (no kidding) till this date. It’s a behemoth of rockets. Furthermore, it is partially reusable and hence, a great cost-effective alternative to all the other space payload carriers out there.
Why does it matter?
According to the SpaceX website, Falcon heavy has the ability to carry nearly 64 metric tons into the orbit. So now, we can send a payload into orbit in just a single ride that would have taken almost 2 rounds for the best alternative of Falcon heavy out there – The Delta IV Heavy.
So, it would save a lot more of time and apparently, the cost too. Not to mention, it’s reusability is a huge factor here. This successful test launch opens a vast array of opportunities and also proves that crazy things do come true.
Oh! And just to let you know, the very first payload Falcon heavy carried was – a red Tesla Roadster with a mannequin named “starman” in it. How cool is that!!
